ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Media Transformation Challenge Class of 2025 wrapped the first week of its yearlong Executive Fellowship at the Poynter Institute Friday.

This diverse group of 32 senior executives began its week with a face-to-face discussion with the outgoing class – a hallmark of the program since its inception in 2007. The freshly minted MTC Alumni shared insights into their toughest moments (going public with their challenges, pivoting mid-year, etc), strategies for success (be radically present), and biggest surprises (deep class connections, personal and leadership growth).

2025 Fellows then dove deep into core MTC Tools like problem definition, “from/to” transformations, and “design/do” loops. They learned to distinguish between activities and outcomes and how to leverage RAOOI and s-curve frameworks. They applied core concepts through individual exercises, small group discussions, and activities designed to identify and clarify their own performance goals.

By the end of the week, participants had laid the foundation for a year of impactful progress and growth. They’d drafted preliminary challenge statements integrating their intended transformations, success metrics, approaches, and outcomes, and began charting a route up the s-curve.

“This week was a turning point for me,” The 19th’s Chief Creative Officer, Clarice Bajkowski, said. “It not only brought clarity but also gave me the tools and support I’ve been needing. With the renewed backing of my peers and senior leadership, I feel more energized and equipped than ever to get to work.”

“After the first week, I’m so inspired by my fellow leaders in the program and feel equipped to go back to my newsroom and begin having meaningful conversations about the work we’ll embark on together to create real transformative change for our journalists and readers,” Senior Assistant Managing Editor at The Minnesota Star Tribune, Gregory Mees, said.

“This type of change can be scary,” ABC News Bureau Chief Joshua Hoyos said. “I’m so happy I am on this journey with 31 new friends who are so supportive, smart, and fun.”

Fellows continue to sharpen their performance challenges, initiate design/do experiments, and drive wins bolstered by weekly coaching calls before reconvening for the second session of the year-long program in March.
